From 19 to 22 May, the BioTrainValue team participated in the 11th International Scientific Conference “Renewable Energy Sources” — ICORES 2026, held in Krynica-Zdrój.
It was a highly valuable event filled with inspiring discussions, knowledge exchange and presentations of the latest research results and initiatives related to renewable energy sources, bioenergy, biomass conversion, clean technologies and measurement methods.
During the conference, we had the opportunity to present the results of the MSCA Staff Exchanges BioTrainValue project, carried out by our team from Lodz University of Technology, Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering.
The BioTrainValue team contributed to the scientific programme with three oral presentations and one poster presentation.
The first oral presentation, entitled Torrefaction of biomass in steam: the influence of the process on the physicochemical properties of biochars intended for agricultural applications — results of the BioTrainValue project, was delivered by Szymon Szufa
The second oral presentation, The use of pine, spruce, miscanthus and wastewater treatment plant residues for biochar production by torrefaction as a carbon carrier, was delivered by Piotr Piersa
The third oral presentation, Biochar Production via Dry, Wet, and Steam Torrefaction: Impacts on Energy Properties and Anaerobic Digestion, was delivered by Hilal Unyay
In addition, Elise Roth presented the poster Design and Operation of a Batch Superheated Steam Torrefaction Reactor
The event was also an excellent opportunity to strengthen long-standing cooperation with scientific and business partners, including the University of Agriculture in Krakow, Ukrainian University in Europe, Silesian University of Technology, AGH University of Krakow, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Czestochowa University of Technology, Cracow University of Technology, the Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, IGU OZE, Galmet Sp. z o.o. Sp. k., the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture, and many other institutions.
The conference also resulted in new ideas for R&D projects, innovative initiatives and joint scientific publications. The discussions between academia and industry were particularly valuable, highlighting the strong potential of cross-sector collaboration in supporting the energy transition.
