ROLE IN THE PROJECT
The main Area of BEST GmbH involved in the project is Area 1 – Biorefineries, which focuses on integrated and multifunctional concepts optimizing efficiency and sustainability of the used biomass feedstock. Here BEST carries out research on different technologies needed for the conversion of the used resources into intermediary and final products, which are also coupling energy conversion and industrial use of (intermediary) goods and services.
With a main focus on pyrolysis and gasification, the following infrastructure of BEST will be available for research activities organized in the framework of the BioTrainValue project:
– Syngas Platform Vienna, focusing on the production and further upgrading of synthesis gas, by thermochemical gasification https://best-research.eu/content/en/infrastructure/Syngas_Platform_Vienna
– GreenCarbonLab Wieselburg, in which simple biorefinery concepts for the production of sustainable carbon products using pyrolysis are researched https://best-research.eu/content/en/infrastructure/greencarbon_lab
– Other technical equipment available https://best-research.eu/content/en/infrastructure/technical_equipment
Moreover, BEST will contribute to research activities in the topics of Smart- and Microgrids, in which bioenergy is distributed to end-users as well as LCA analysis of biofuels (Synthetic Natural Gas, Hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuels) obtained via gasification processes
staff members
BEST was established in 2003 as the competence center Austrian Bioenergy Centre GmbH (ABC) and today operates under BEST – Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH, looking back on more than 20 years of applied, but scientifically ambitious research and development. Highly motivated by the goal to make the energy supply more sustainable, BEST contributed substantially to the advances of the state-of-science and the state-of-technology in the fields of its key competences, namely in biomass combustion and gas production from biomass.
As a link between academic research and industrial technology development, BEST’s vision is to develop and demonstrate sustainable and circular biorefinery processes and technologies for producing green gases, green liquid fuels, and green products, all of which will support the transition to a climate-neutral, zero-fossil-carbon economy. By using excellent experimental facilities, ranging from lab to pilot and demonstration scale plants, BEST’s goal is to conduct applied research of the highest scientific quality.
BEST applies advanced digital methods for technology development, and for the basic automation, optimization, and monitoring of the operation of individual technologies and entire plants. With the help of holistic and technology-neutral planning tools, BEST ensures that biorefineries and energy supply technologies are optimally integrated into a sustainable, renewable energy system.
